2025 March On Challenge

Almost half way!

I am almost at the half way mark! 44kms down 52kms to go!

My injuries are holding up better with the new shoes I bought to support them through this challenge. It's a pity I didn't think to buy them and wear them in sooner. It's been extra fun breaking in the new shoes. The numbness throughout my feet and hot spots on my heels have helped me be grateful that my injuries are not also exacerbated again.

 *****

Hot spots are like the dark days of depression. The skin breaks through after constant friction and strain, then every step brings the sharp stabbing pain right to your conscious mind. Step after step you feel the pain. But after a while you get used to the pain and you simply push through. Everything goes numb and each step doesn't hurt like it used to. You are just there existing between steps. Until you are snapped out of the numbed state and the pain quickly returns. Step by step you are consistently reminded. You body is begging you to slow down or stop, because each step you take is damaging your body further.

Like hot spots, depression needs time to heal and you need time to breathe. Time to recover from the previous state of being.time to recover from all the times you pushed through the pain; until you didn't feel anything anymore.

Unlike hot spots, those dark numb days can be some of the most dangerous days of depression. When the pain returns is when we are on the cusp and are most vulnerable. It's the time to decide if we fall back into the numbed state of being pushing through the pain or if we stop, breathe and heal for a while.

There are no promises that the darkness won't return, just like there are no promises the hot spots won't reignite the moment your foot hits the ground in those half worn in shoes.

The key is to keep going.

This doesn't mean to keep pushing through the sludge, but to keep choosing life. Life can and will get better with time. Things will change, that is a given. Nothing in this world is ever unaffected by change, not even us mere mortals.

Summer. Autumn. Winter. Spring.

One step at a time.

One breath at a time.

Moment by moment, we can and will leave the darkness behind.

First long stretch.

I was able to walk just over 11 km today. I am so grateful to have a larger part of the "trail" behind me.

My 11kms were broken up into two walks. The first 2km was done on the treadmill this morning with my daughter.

This afternoon, I was joined by a dear friend of mine who encouraged me to keep pace and keep going. Together, we tracked just over 9 km. The sun was beaming down on us as we walked our way along the twisting bends of the mighty River Murray.

Occasionally, we were embraced with a refreshing cool breeze. It was like a gentle nudge from the river to keep marching on.

It feels good to be just under halfway to the first check point, my injuries are nagging at me this evening, but pain is just weakness leaving the body. I will take a little break to allow my injuries to settle a little and then crack back into the trail with another large walk soon.

My plan is to chip away at the main goal with my gentle morning walks on the treadmil alongside my daughter.

 Slow and Steady.

 Bye for now,

Early Start

Many of you might relate to the endless nights where you toss and turn in bed and no matter what you do, nothing seems to help fight off the insomnia.

After hours of staring at my celing and not being able to sleep. I decided to thorw my sneakers on and head out the door to get started on chipping away at the 96km.

I would love to be able to walk the 96km in a faster time frame, but due to injuries I am allowing myself a little bit longer to complete the course.

Today was as good as any other day to get started. I rolled myself out of bed at 6am and to decided head to the gym and get 3kms behind me

3 down, 93 to go.

There might be a few more mid night walks ahead of me if this insomnia doesn't piss off.

Thank you for supporting me on my challenge, and supporting Vets in need 💞

Support my challenge to prevent veteran suicide and save lives

Right now in Australia, at 42%, suicide is the leading cause of death for ex-serving males aged under 30 years old.

So, this March, I am walking to support Soldier On's mental health services and programs to help prevent veteran suicide and save lives.

It would mean so much to me if you donated to support my challenge so that we can show veterans and their families that they are not alone... we stand strong with them.

Together, let's help our heroes march on.

Thanks so much for your support.

So far, I have helped provide:

43

peer support
sessions

25

support

2

sessions

...to support the mental health of our brave veterans to help them march on.

Proud of you for taking this on. The toughest part of any challenge is pacing the middle and finishing strong—stay steady, stay focused, and push through. You've got the fortitude and strength to see this through. Let your inner beast out and show them what you're made of.
