Life is all about turning corners
Tonight’s walk with my beloved fur-baby started as a shining example of personal growth, maturity, and possibly divine intervention. Right from the start she behaved like a perfect little citizen. We encountered several free-range neighbourhood cats, basically her worst fear, and she ignored them with the calm indifference of a seasoned monk. One particularly bold cat even snuck up behind us like a tiny ninja, and she still didn’t react, though she eyed it suspiciously. I briefly wondered if she had achieved enlightenment. Then came the dogs. Instead of her usual “must greet every creature on Earth immediately” routine, she crossed the road to politely avoid them….CROSSED. THE. ROAD…. Like a responsible adult with excellent decision-making skills. Except for one beautiful Shar-Pei. Upon seeing this wrinkly masterpiece, my baby emitted a gentle whine of longing and attempted to initiate what can only be described as an emotional Shakespearean plea for friendship. Still, compared to her usual standards, this was exemplary restraint. Along our walk my sweet little angel kept a close eye on any suspicious looking characters and would quietly suggest we relocate to the other side of the road with plenty of notice - less a frightened retreat and more a strategic defensive manoeuvre. When crossing the road wasn’t possible, she’d simply step in front of me like a prop running interference. Frankly, I felt like I had a slightly furry security detail conducting ongoing risk assessments for the team. A lady stopped us to ask for directions. Normally my beloved would launch herself vertically at any non-threatening human who dared to show excitement while acknowledging her existence, but tonight? She remained grounded. Calm. Composed. Practically running for public office. By this point I was feeling incredibly proud. As we neared the end of our walk I thought to myself, Wow… we’ve really turned a corner. And then… we literally turned a corner. And it was at that exact moment my highly trained security detail apparently clocked off for the evening and proceeded to perform a flawless back-flop manoeuvre directly onto a mysterious gutter carcass like it was a luxury day spa, wriggling back and forth in pure unfiltered joy and bliss. Identifying the species was impossible and frankly not a journey I wished to take. At that exact moment a fast-moving bus appeared. Fortunately for us, I had decided at some point it might be useful to learn how to rescue someone heavier than me during an emergency evacuation. That training came in handy as I heroically dragged my blissfully unaware fur-todler out of the gutter while she continued her enthusiastic carcass massage. The rest of the walk went smoothly. my sweet angel returned home happy, accomplished, and smelling like a crime scene. Character development is not always a straight line. Sometimes it takes a brief detour through a gutter. Love, A very tired humanSupport Our Challenge to Save Lives.
