Walking for those who are struggling

My name is John, and I enlisted in the ADF in 2011, serving in the Royal Australian Corps of Signals for 10 years. I’ve served alongside some amazing people, both domestically and abroad, in environments that were as rewarding as they were adverse. It was in the Army that I was first exposed to suicide awareness training, a topic that hit close to home, as my grandfather died by suicide when I was a young child.

Throughout my service, I have sat with good friends in their darkest moments, letting them know there are people that are here and care for them. Not all injuries are visible, and for those harboring internal wounds, reaching out can feel impossible. Many fear the personal or professional consequences of asking for help, while others may have tried before and felt it was too daunting. The ways people reach out aren't always explicit. It might be a passing desire to catch up with old mates, or a direct 'I’m really not doing well.' Helping someone in need is often confronting and full of uncertainty, but it is a vital conversation that can have a profound impact on someone struggling to find a way through.

Tragically, my younger brother, Lochie, died by suicide in January last year. He lived a short but full life, spending his teenage years on fishing on his boat all day and generally being a larrikin. I was incredibly proud when he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy, further solidifying his love for the sea. Lochie faced some rough times in the years leading up to his death, and I always did my best to be there for him when the world seemed against him. His passing has had an impact I could never have imagined, one I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

My goal is to tell his story in the hope that it gives someone the courage to reach out for help, or the strength to support a mate who is struggling. Let Lochie be the reason you are brave enough to speak up.
